What a night - What a convention

Something has changed. Tonight is amazing. I can feel a turn of the tide.

This wouldn't have happened without Michelle's speech on Monday and, most of all, without Hillary's speech yesterday.

But tonight the intensity and quality of speeches have been amazing.  Bill Clinton is still a genius, of rhetoric and of the mastery of policy. Kerry was so strong. And (at the time this diary was written) we still have Biden on deck.

We know what matters, we know what politics is about. It's about our lives, our hopes, our possibilities. It's about the world we live in and the world we want to create.

I wanted earlier to write a diary on the amazing Obama campaign, on their ability to work at a state and local level. And if you want to read some of what I was going to draw from, you can read this: http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump /archive/2008/08/27/the-view-from-plouff e-s-office.aspx

But that can wait until another day to have that discussion.

Tonight let us revel in a belonging to a party that has improved the lives of Americans and that will do more. Let us revel in belonging to a party that can lodge tough policy attacks but will not stoop to the personal and the petty -- but can vigorously criticize when others do so.  Let us revel in belonging to a party that has always sought to involve and empower the people.

Tonight I am so very proud to be a Democrat.

It's like after so many years (2.00 / 2)

the Democratic Party all marched into a sports arena in Denver, Colorado one later summer night and right there, discovered who they were and all that enthusiasm and force that seemed to be wasted away in the wake of the primary suddenly filled the Pepsi Center...in fact it filled it so much, it can't fit and now we need a football stadium for our last night.

I just don't see how the Republicans will top this.

They can't top this (none / 0)

That's why St. Paul is the last place Republicans like Oregon's (outgoing?) Senator Gordon Smith want to be seen.

Gustuv Aims At New Orleans Sept. 1 (none / 0)

God must not be on the GOP side these days. Hurricane Gustav may upstage the Republican Convention next week. The NOAA five day cone has Hurricane Gustuv striking New Orleans as a category 3 storm at 8:00 pm on September 1. Just behind Gustav, another system is expected to become Tropical Storm Hanna.

Did he really pray for rain?  What an ass.  Anyway, the weather folks on the net seem to suggest a stunning 0% chance of rain in Denver, tomorrow.

No way. No how. No McCain.

You know what is ironic? (none / 0)

Almost 3 years to the day Katrina landed in New Orleans and caused massive devastation. Now, there Gustave which is predicted to land in damn near the same exact path. Do you know when? The VERY SAME DAY BUSH is to speak at the RNC. Irony...

Re: What a night - What a convention (2.00 / 6)

Well conceived, well crafted, enthusiastically attended, smoothly executed and a smorgasbord of well deserved head-fakes perpetrated on the political punditry.

The disunity narrative which was so fashionable a few days ago merely enhances the sense of unity and common purpose shining through from the convention floor.  Kudos to Hillary, Bill, Kerry and all the others who are building the structure of our impending victory.  And Obama hasn't even shown up yet...

Re: What a night - What a convention (2.00 / 1)

You're right, the "disunity" meme consumed the MSM, the PUMA whackosity drove all of us up a tree, and all of that momentum was captured and turned around like a fastball down the middle.

And now there is tomorrow, 73 hours for anyone to care who McCain picks as a VP (no-win situation for him), then a week of being reminded what the country doesn't like about the GOP.

You'd almost think that the people running our party might just know what they're doing...

Re: What a night - What a convention (2.00 / 4)

I think that Biden's speech was very successful in telling his fellow Democrats (and America):

"Hey, you folks know me, you know about my family, you know I don't live in D.C. This Obama guy knows what he's talking about, and can get us out of this mess Bush got us in. Not to mention that if John McCain gets elected, we're screwed."

The roll call vote was riveting

I think Bill had the line of the night:

"Thank makes two of us, actually, that makes 18 million of us."

Re: What a night - What a convention (2.00 / 3)

No the best line was Bill saying that 16 years ago the Republicans said he was too young and inexperienced.

That was the line right there that redeemed him in my eyes.
